Who We Are
MEDC
is one of Salt Lake City's oldest nonprofit organizations involved
in the development, ownership, and management of affordable housing.
Mission
The
mission of MEDC is to serve the community by developing, owning,
and managing clean, safe, affordable housing for low and moderate
income populations.
History
In
1975, MEDC was spun off from its parent organization, Multi-Ethnic
Housing Corporation and incorporated as a Utah nonprofit corporation.
As one of the first nonprofit providers of affordable housing in
Salt Lake City, MEDC has an extensive history of serving this market.
After completing its first development of affordable senior housing
in 1978, MEDC evolved into one of the leading providers of property
management services for affordable housing in the region.
Strategy
In selecting affordable
housing projects to undertake, Multi-Ethnic emphasizes criteria
that contribute strong cash flow and ensure long-term sustainability.
Furthermore, it seeks to engage in projects with qualities that
strengthen and revitalize communities.
Foremost among these characteristics
are accessibility to public transportation and employment, opportunities
for mixed-income occupancy, and the incorporation of multiple use
spaces, such as community centers and commercial or retail elements,
that provide a benefit to the surrounding area.
As affordable housing
is only one component of a good community, MEDC works to build partnerships
with service providers, neighborhood organizers, and other community-based
agencies to inspire long-term success.
Strategy
for the Future
Over the next four years,
MEDC aims to enhance its position as one of the foremost providers
of affordable housing in Utah. The goal is to significantly increase
its asset base and portfolio of developments that will help meet
this growing need.
